REACH Dragons will be featured on New Paper for the Gallop of the Dragons Race 2010! The reporter is going to come down this Saturday 6/5/10 to SDBA at 2pm to take pictures and interview us after our training.

REACH Dragons is chosen among the many teams because of REACH's work and vision in working with youths and building character and imparting values this sport.

Wasn't it exciting today??!!! Let's keep the morale that way and let's hit the finishing line with no REGRETS!

Alright, tomolo is THE DAY again. Here are the details:

Reporting time for all CSC rowers:
730am (latest timings coz the organisers want to clear the postponed events to the first part of the day)

Team, this timing is for all to be there ready to start warm up. It's very important to meet this timing. If anyone late, it will not just make you anxious but the whole boat will worry coz we will be short of 1 rower! Pls arrange your own transport there k. If you have parents who can send you, then try and see who you can pick up along e way k?

Attire:
Our black team jersey with compression top. (CSC boat 1, bring the Seahawk jersey and wear that k?)

Pls don't come with empty stomachs k? I know it's very early but you have to eat something.

Pls note the following admin stuffs:
1. All rowers are to report to Bedok reservoir at the stated reporting times. You can be early or on the dot but NOT late! Pls gather at the area between the food stalls and the MOE building. Once there, try looking out for the rest. pls see map below.

2. Pls plan your own meals and make sure you eat/drink enough. If you want, there will be food stalls on the race site but don't expect proper food. So if you want to have a proper meal and ready for the race, pls plan for it.
3. Pls be responsible for your own belongings. On that day we will consolidate the things and put together, and probably we will have to help look after each other's belongings. Don't leave your stuffs lying around. There won't be locker facilities on that day.
4. All races where there are heats, will select the top 2 teams and the fastest 3rd position team from all the heats to proceed to semi-finals.
5. All semi-finals and finals and our Tnet Category races will be held on 25th April Sunday. We won't know the timing of the Sunday events until Saturday night itself. The team will be informed by Suyuan through SMS.
6. All rowers are to wear the black team jersey + compression top (for those who have) on Saturday & Sunday. All rowers who don't have the black jersey will receive one. All rowers who have but never bring will have to borrow from those who have for their event.
7. All rowers who ordered the blue jersey but haven't pay the $8 are to bring on race day before you can get your jersey.

Ok, pls come back to this blog on Friday night for any final final updates k?? If not, pls be mentally and physically prepared for the race. Remember, now it's not the time to think about anything else except focusing on finishing STRONG. It's the moral and the spirit that's important, not just about winning. Let's have a wonderful race!

REACH Dragons at Spore River Regatta 2009

Guys,

I think it's too limited to use words to describe the whole experience that we had at Regatta this year. It's just totally indescribeable. To those that were with us in the water, you could feel the rush. To those that were on shore looking at us, you could see the whole team's spirit and efforts.. Well done!

Our Sat's heats, we fought against Filippino Dragons, SP and NP. Guess what.. we were not that far! all within 1 sec difference! wahahaha! that's really something amazing, considering that we are not school team like them who train more than once a week!

Our Sun's heats, we learnt our lesson and made the 1 sec difference and we came in 1st! What a joy! And we proceeded to the Semi-finals. Our competitors were strong, we fought against Taman Jurong CSC, a legend. And we came in 2nd. There were many other Csc teams that were strong. Well though our story ends here and we din make it into the finals, due to some reasons which it's not really important.. It's really the beginning of a great journey!

For all those that are in boat 1 and 4, it's very crucial for us to train with sembawang together during the weekdays. As far as you can, join us k? For those not in these 2 boats, you are also welcome to join to build up your fitness for the race.

For this Regatta, besides preparing the team physically, we are also getting a "new" look.

The above are rash guards which have:

1. UPF50+ rated for UVA and UVB protection.

2. 4-way stretchable fabric for comfort fit and superior flexibility.

3. Flatlock stitch construction to prevent chafing and abrasion.

4. Content and weight of fabric material optimised to achieve compression effect for muscular support so as to enhance sports performance and recovery.

5. Black and white options

It's offered at a special rate of $15/pcs for short sleeve and $20/pcs for long sleeve to REACH Dragons.

Long time no update liao.. haha.. Ok a few things are happening..

1. REACH Dragons this Sat/Sun will be representing Geylang West T-Net Club in the T-Net category at the 5-Crew Race taking place at Jurong PA. Timings and of the race will be released later. All supporters keen to come and see see look look contact me k? =)

2. 1st Round of Mentors training for volunteers is able to come to an end. We are still looking for volunteers to be mentors of youth-at-risk. So if you are keen, pls contact me k?

Youth Mentoring Programme

REACH FSC is going to some exciting days ahead. We will be piloting a youth mentoring programme with National Youth Council. We are looking for volunteers who are age 20 years old and above to mentor youths age between 13-16. The programme will begin in Oct and currently we are at a stage of recruitment and training.

Hey all,

Updates on our Triathlon Team.. all of us completed the race. Everyone of us came in strong and most important is that it's the first triathlon for the rest of the team. You can find out from every one of them their experience and excitement of completing the race.

Ha.. now that it's over, think we going to take a break? No! In fact we are going for Osim Triathlon 2010 already! haha.. all of them will be either going for longer distances or trying to better their timings.. so join us if u are game!

Hey all,

Updates on the upcoming Osim Triathlon 2009. Just to introduce the 5 of us who will be going for it!

That's ME! haha.. Going for the Sprint Distance. This is my 4th tri since last year already.. trying to break my personal best!

This is Fernell. This is his first tri and he is doing a sprint distance as well. He has being running and being training hard for this tri. Yeah!

This is Jin Guan. Only Sec 2, 14 years old this year. The youngest in our team. He is doing a mini distance, also first time. Studying at Zhong Hua Sec, and part of REACH Dragonboat Team. Young and potential!

This is Yew Teck, Sec 2, 15 this year. He is from Zhong Hua Sec as well, also part of REACH Dragonboat Team. Have been training hard with me in running and swimming. I'm sure this race will be memorable for him! He is also doing a mini category.
This is Huang Kai. He is 16 this year, Sec 4 from 1st Toa Payoh Sec. Also in REACH Dragonboat Team, and doing the Sprint distance. Being a soccer player, running is no kick for him.. :p But he has taken the challenge of trying the sprint distance though its his first tri!

Hi REACH Dragons,

I did this video to just bring back memories of our last race at the Dragonboat Festival 09. It was an awesome race and experience for us all. Most of all, the bonds, friendships, time that we have spent together as a team.

I know some of you need to focus on your exams and studies this period thus can't row with us this season. But no matter what, the bonds and ties still remain. See Set Smack - S'Mentoring @ ROMP!09

Hi people!

ROMP!09 marks the end of our first round of S'Mentoring programme. We have trained and groomed many of the youths to be prepared for ROMP!09 to meet teams from various schools and institutes. It was truly a meet of sportsmanship and a fight of the titans there. They fought fiercely in every match yet showing a sense of true sportsmanship and friendship. Here are some of our teams.. Enjoy!

Besides the games, there were stage performances by various performance artists showcasing their talents and skills.. cool music, dance and talents!

Our under 17 soccer team from Unity Sec School. Took part in ROMP!08, and now back for greater challenge.Another under 17 Team from Zhonghua Sec Sch. Ha.. a group of fun and exciting guys and gals! With a spirit that never say die! Keep it up!Our opens category for Badminton, made up of the youth team staff from REACH (Serene is not in the pic :P), and 2 other volunteers, Sean and Wenhao. I must say this was a very strong and determined team. We played through in the semi-finals and met the teams with good skills and even some from National Team. Though we lost in the Semis.. but it was a good experience to hone and challenge our skills. We will be back!

Our team from Zhonghua Sec Sch. Great team who took part in the under 17 category. Won many teams and eventually lost to some school teams. Don't worry guys, you haven't lost at all, coz you fought beyond your limitations.. btw Zhonghua doesn't have a badminton CCA, so you are really good for your standards liao! Ganbatte!

We are very happy to see that all our teams gave in their best shot. And I believe ROMP!09 being the first tournament that they ever took part in will become a stepping stone to more things in future! So stay tune for our teams k!

Alright.. next up will be our Triathlon Team for the OSIM Triathlon on 1st August. It's just 2 weeks away! Woohoo!!!

Our Joule Club has a team that is going for the coming triathlon on 1st Aug.. we have been training hard, on land, in sea, on bikes... and it's just 2 weeks away!

Here in the pic is Yew Teck and Huan Kai.. Absent for today's training were Jin Guan and Fernell.. Do catch us in action again!
Alright, Tri Team, pls take note of the following dates k:
28th Jul 630pm - Meet at Parkway Parade to go and collect Race Pack
31st Jul 3pm - Meet at East Coast Mac to go down and familiarize with the actual race route

For these 2 remaining weeks, let's train hard and focus on training to bring up your heart rate to 80-90% k? For the last week before the race, take it easy and start to slow down to allow your body to be race ready!

Important info for all teams:

Time: Team Captains to report at 8am to register your team. Failing to do so by 830am, teams might be disqualified.
Venue: CCAB (MOE) at Evans Road. Teams are to meet Joanne and Joe at Newton MRT station control at 730am.
Attire: Black singlets preferably with shorts
Things to bring: EZ link/IC for verification purposes + sports equipment + $5 at least for your lunch. (There is no ATM nearby, so pls bring enough cash.)

Note to soccer teams:
1. Games will be played on fields so players can bring soccer boots.
2. Round robin style
3. 10 min per game
4. Fixtures has been generated and team captains will know on the day itself their matches.

Note to badminton teams:
1. Under 17 teams will be playing double knock out system, open category team will be playing round robin.
2. Teams pls note your team no. REACH Peirce - T7, REACH Ultimate - T8, REACH ThreeE'3s - T15, REACH Indescriable - A2

For all, pls note that substitution is only allowed before the match starts. So therefore, teams will have to decide if they want to bring in substitutes before the match starts. No substituition is allowed during the game unless serious injury to the players.

2) Meeting Place and Time:
There is only going to be one single meeting place and time.

Marina Bay Station Control MRT 730am sharp!

It's going to be early for some of you to wake up. So pls do your own preparations to sleep early and plan for your own waking up and DON'T oversleep!

On that day, no vehicles will be allowed to drive in to Marina Barrage. Therefore, if you are taking cab or your parents are sending you, you will have to get them to send you to Marina Bay MRT where we will all take the shuttle service provided.

Once upon arival of the MRT, report straight to Pricilla to take your attendance.

3) Things to bring:

A) Personal Paddle & Life Vest (share and borrow if you do not have one)
B) Own water supply
C) Own food (limited food sold and we will stay till about 2 plus pm from morning)
D) Fighting Spirit & Spirit to win

4) What it takes to Win!

Since our awesome performance at PA Championship, we have said enough during training about how much we want to win. The training tempo has stepped up; tyres become a training aid. Countless cursing were uttered as we pull that donut for all the long distance sets. I have seen all sorts of methods to push ourselves. All the pair by pair up 10, back pack united and all the shouting during training. Will that bring us closer to a win? It is now time to perform and achieve. Its not only about how fit we are, but how hungry we are in winning. Let this race be one you will remember. One that you did your best with your fellow rowers.

In this race, I want to you to see yourself as the greatest enemy. It's not your competitors but it's your own limits, your own mindsets, your own laziness. So in this race, whether we win or lose in the race, it doesn't really matter coz if we leave the race overcoming ourselves, we would have already won. We win in our studies, our work, our personal life, our dreams and many more!

5. Pre-Race preparations

The day before the race, is very important. You are to get sufficient rest and to keep your focus clear. During the day before race, run through your mind all our race strategies. From the 10,20,10 hard to maintenance, regular hard 10 and finally to the charge. Run through your mind how it feels, what it takes and overcome the race in your mind first. Keep rehearsing until it's in you because during the race, there is no way you are able to hear the timings and there will be lots of distraction!

Last weekend was AWESOME!! Just take a look at our team above!

It's really amazing how we performed at the mixed 20 open category. The spirit and attitude was really great and I believe unforgettable for a lifetime!

Hey all!

Yes i know u are all excited n looking forward to the race on 25th, 26th April.. Not just about the winning (although I believe our team will deliver the results!) but it's about how hard we have worked until today. So let's get ready and scare the other teams with our "spirit" k? REACH wooosshhhh!

K, let me give you all something to look forward to! ITS OUR REACH DRAGONS ICE CREAM PARTY!!!!!

Venue: REACH FSC - Bishan St 13 Blk 187 void deck, just behind Bishan CC

kkkk... We will have our very FIRST ICE CREAM PARTY!!! I will make sure u all eat until you stomache..haha..

Another thing we will do is to watch our race day video of the 2 days. I will be consolidating photos and videos taken of the whole event and all our previous training sessions and showing u all.. where we see many "muscular guys n pretty ladies" huh..hahaha..

REACH Dragons Training

Our first training at Bedok Reservoir.. Pre Training Time, settling admin. Good that almost all are on time! Good discipline guys!

ha 'some of e guys' actually popped over to the other side n help themselves to e food n drinks.. carrot cake n elcair.. :P

Our training was xiong! raced 300m, 500m, hard 10 n 30 for 3 sets. heh. funny things also happened, i.e. someone screaming because of spider on boat, someone saying 'up' at wrong timings which send J n P in fleets of laughter n hard to row.. etc.

Anw, we were inspired to up our stamina and power. Guys, coach said to lift weights k! So next wk onwards, gals, lets give them our bags to carry. ha.

k after trg we showered n this is where more fun continues!

our warm down tee! Looks pro! Thanks Pric, Ben n Yaya n all who helped. Such team spirit that most of us except *ahem* wore after our shower.

I know the dragonboat team people are very excited and happening about their new jerseys and paddles... they have been hogging the limelight here! Lol... ok la i'm not complaining.. cos they make this blog alive! hee...:)

Here are some updates in Joule Club and programmes and events U may want to consider joining!

Sports:

Dragonboat
This is held on saturdays mornings from 9am-12noon at Kallang Dragonboat Association. This is a regular programme at our centre where youths learn the basics of dragonboat and lifeskills through team bonding activities.

We currently have 1 dragonboat team (RFSC Dragons) of around 25 youths and young adults who trains regularly on staturdays and compete in yearly dragonboat compeitions. So, contact Joe if you are interested to learn dragonboat, be part of the team, or simply enjoy the thrill of watching dragonboat compeition, come and support RFSC Dragons in the competition! The next competition is in APRIL..!

Community Service (Overseas):

Footprints Expedition (Cambodia) in December
This is our annual overseas expedition trip to Phnom Phen, Cambodia. It is a 10 days trip whereby we embark on various projects such as building, health education, and children's programmes to benefit the local community in Cambodia.

Footprints was started and inspired by this quote which we firmly believe in; "Life is not about where you go, but about the footprints you leave behind in people's lives."
We are inspired to make a difference and we want to empower the youths to make a difference in the lives of others. We are looking for interested youth participants and volunteers to join us in this year's trip.

Outreach:

'See, Set, Smack' Badminton Programme:
We will be conducting weekly weekday afternoon sessions of badminton at Bishan Sports Complex. We hope to increase youths' interest in badminton as a healthy sport and recreation, and as an avenue whereby we keep in touch with our school programme youths and current Joule Mentoring Club members. Participants will be trained on the basic techniques and skills, and take part in friendly matches. Youths who are interested are encouraged to bring their own rackets.

Dates: 24Mar, 31 Mar, 7 Apr, 14 Apr, 21 Apr (tuesdays)
We will have sessions from Jul to Sep too.
Time: 3.30pm to 5.30pm
Venue: Bishan Sports Complex (near J8)

Cycling:
We will be organising 2 cycling trips on 3rd June and 31st Oct. We are looking for 40 to 50 youths and Joule Club members to join us in this fun and energetic sport! Join us as we cycle around Singapore!

So....if you are bored staying at home, or wondering what you should do during the holidays, come JOIN us!!!! U can contact any of us to sign up. :)

hi REACH dragons,
today will be the resuming of our trainings. i really hope that we can take this season to a higher height than the previous seasons. not just in terms of competitions, but in terms of team spirit, perseverance and determination as an individual and as a team.

i am looking forward to this year coz i have been planning for a few things and am slowly seeing it happen. there are 2 things that i am working on now:

1. to see the mentoring of the Nus alumni team over our team of rowers. the expertise of the alumni rowers will definitely boost our skills and spirit. but more importantly, i am hoping for the nus alumni team to provide that big brother and sister to our team in terms of character building and developing and mentoring.

2. secondly, i am hoping to see that eventually our team this year will be able to benefit a group of disabled youths from Spore Disability Sports Council and allow these youths to be able to have a chance to row. Our team will just basically be that befriender to these youths. yes, they may not be able to row like we do, but what i want to see is that we will thru e process learn to see the many blessings we have and learn to see what many others don't have in this world. but the irony is that we often forget what we are blessed with and often just bury that talent and strength.

i hope that thru the above 2 moves, REACH Dragons will not just be any other ordinary dragonboat team, but one of different spirit and attitude!

Yesterday did a half island ride with Fernell and Daryl. Ha.. it was fun, we just went on and on, up slope and down slope. Weather was good in the morning coz it rained the whole day the day before. And then they formed their master piece sandwhich.. with meaning behind it too!!

one of e sandwich ingredient is egg.. some like it cooked, some like it raw..the only wat to find out is to crack it on e head.. apparently all e trippers had e raw egg... thanks to e station masters. ha.

Dragonboat River Regatta 08!

River Regatta was over last Sat, Sun. Really look forward to next year where our team can get onto the waters again and fight it out. I am sure the team can't wait for that to happen too!

Osim Corporate Triathlon Results!

Hey all, Osim Corporate Triathlon is over! And our REACH United Relay Team under the Non-profit category came in 6th position! With Jamine's swim of 5:57min, Matthew's bike of 44.05min and Fernell's run of 26.16min, adding together with the timing of 1.16 hr. Congratulations to the team!

And for myself, I completed the Sprint Distance with a timing of 1.20 hr. Completed the swim with 5.12min, bike 50.22min, run 25.25min. It was a great race!

For now till the end of the year, we are busy preparing for Footprints Expedition 2009, where we will be going Cambodia for a community service trip from 15-24th Dec. We are busy doing fundraising at the same time by selling 2009 Desk Calendars! U can help us by purchasing them, at $10 each!

With Footprints Project every year, we believe strongly that;

“Life is not about where we go, but about the footprints we leave behind in others’ lives.”

Next year promises to be more exciting! New stuff include adventure camps, local community projects with low-income families, mentoring trainings, and our very own Joule Club publication! Most likely we will publish our very own newletter just for You! Are you excited? :)

today dragonboat training was great. things that we did were refining of our strokes and techniques, endurance sets and fartlek sets and we included in fun things like tug of war, jumping into water and time sets!

well, seems like our new coach Weihua and Yilin are really great people, from the NUS Alumni team. haha.. and i am looking to rowing with the NUS alumni team coz I am from NUS too!

The rest out there, if you want something challenging, well start with our rowing sessions first k.. on Saturdays at Kallang 10 - 12pm. Today's sun was good! I love the tan.. hahaha..

'Girl's Talk' STEP UP @ YCKSS

MILK Run 2008

On 6th Jul, a bunch of us joined the MILK Run in support of keeping youths on track in lives.. There are 9.4km and 6km races. Do check out the pics.. we look very much alive, don't we? ;) It was great fun, pushing ourselves for a worthy cause. Much like in life, even when difficulties sets in, we should just KEEP ON GOING. Footprints in Cambodia

Thinking of going overseas this Dec and yet want to make sure its a fun and meaningful trip?

How about making footprints in the hearts of the needy in Cambodia?

'Footprints' is a name of the overseas community service component in Joule Club. Last year, we did projects at a rubbish dump, village and orphanage. Picture speaks a thousand word, let the below pictures narrate then!

At the Rubbish Dump

Children at the Rubbish Dump. They walk, or rather, run around barefooted and some have cuts on their feet. Part of our project includes doing first aid for their wounds.

Even though we have a language barrier with the children, we communicated our love through hand games.

Nurse Sandra and Dr Joe opened a clinic and catered to the many in Rubbish Dump who are unwell. Giving out mosquito nets and water filters to residents of rubbish dump. They co-paid for the items while we contributed the rest. Look at their grateful smiles :)

At the villageMichelle and Ben Poh working hard under the blazing sun filling sandbags. Even though the weather was hot and the bags were heavy, nobody stopped for a rest until all the bags were filled up. Thumbs up for the team spirit!! Yea!

Digging a deep hole so as to construct a communal toilet in the village. It was not easy work.. Ever wonder how is she going to hoist herself up after that? ;P self sacrificial spirit, toes up this time! :D

At the orphanage

Our masterpiece! It now overlooks a multi purpose rooftop. We painted soccer court lines and hopscotch lines on the ground so as to serve as a playing field for the orphans.

All gear up for the Christmas party at Orphanage! Time to perform after all our practices :)

With fireworks and sparklers, we really had a BLAST of a time at Cambodia in 2007! :)

Some Highlights from ROMP!08

ROMP!08, 31st May 2008, 1pm-10pm

All that's well ends well!

ROMP!08 finally ended on a high note! Organised by Harvest Care Centre and in collaboration with REACH Family Service Centre, ROMP!08 saw more than 100 secondary schools and tertiary teams compete in basketball, soccer, and captain's ball. Even the pouring rain could not dampen the sportsmanship and perserverance we noticed among the teams. Several teams even came in their own unique jerseys!

This event was a success because of the youths which participated enthusiastically, in spite of the rain. Their energy was contagious! You could feel it in the air! Thanks to our kind and generous sponsors who provided us with the goodie bags, set up booth games and prizes! It is also our honour and privilege to have Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Ministry of Community, Youth and Sports (MCYS), and the Youth Olympics Games (YOG) committee with us in this event.

Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped us out in this event. On behalf of Joule Club here at REACH Family Service Centre, we sincerely thank all of you who took part and helped out in this event, a big THANK YOU to all of you!

I'm someone who is tall, dark, sporty and I'm game for good fun anytime! :D I love racket games, vball, soccer, blading, running, swimming, cycling, wakeboarding..etc. Sports energize me, clears my mind and reminds me that I can overcome challenges. Try out our Joule club sports to experience for yourself!

The other side of me love reading, baking, watching a good movie with friends, and chilling out on a beach and gazing at the sun's descence into the horizon :)

Another of my love in life is YOUths! Yes, in other words, YOU, my dear friend, if you are a youth :) I enjoyed my youth days and I know how youth days can be both a time of fun and challenges (studies, bgr, friends, parents, self image and even pimples!).

Thus, if you allow me, I hope to walk along with you during this happening phase of your life, work through the problems that you may encounter and maximise the joy of being a youth (taking part in Joule Club activities is one way)!

A quote that inspired me to be a social worker is, 'Some people see youths as bottles to be filled. But I see youths as candles to be lit'.
